In our second installment of “ITALIAN AT HEART,” we’ll meet Nicolette Carapellotti. This is her journey of learning Italian and getting in touch with her roots.
Here's Nicolette's Story:
My family is Italian and my mother speaks fluently, but because my Italian-American father doesn’t speak the language, we spoke only English at home. Growing up around Italians, I understood the language but never knew how to speak “technically,” only phonetically. I have always been proud of my Italian heritage and I love all things Italian, so my desire to speak the language properly had always been a goal of mine.
In the summer of 2015, I had just moved to Hoboken and knew very few people. I was looking for a way to meet new people while engaging in an activity that was fun and interesting. I decided to Google “Italian classes in New York City,” not knowing that there would be one so close to home! Surprisingly, I found Learn Language Hoboken and saw on the website that an Italian class was beginning shortly. It was an Intermediate Level 1, but because I had studied Italian in college, I hoped that I would be able to start at that level. Once I had gotten in contact with the school, I set up a telephone conversation with Alberto (Learn Language Hoboken’s Italian teacher) so he could assess my fluency level. Alberto gave me the go-ahead to sign up for the intermediate class (Grazie, Alberto) and the rest is history!
I cannot say enough great things about my experience at LLH. Alberto is truly a one-of-a-kind teacher; he is an amazing instructor and so much more than that, he’s just an all-around great person! Alberto sincerely cares about his students and has made my Tuesday nights more enjoyable. I have made amazing friends in my classes and have so many great memories - experiences I would never have had if I hadn't enrolled! I definitely found what I was looking for - meeting great people and enriching my language skills.
One of the best memories was the trip to Italy with my classmates, what a one-of-a-kind experience! We really wanted to experience Italy like “real Italians” by staying in Airbnb’s, speaking the language, trying to connect with the locals, and immersing ourselves in the culture - like sticking to the “no cappuccinos after breakfast” rule and enjoying gelato any time of the day! We did a lot of eating, sightseeing, hiking, and shopping, plus spent time at the beach; we made sure to check all of our must-do items off of the list.
Having learned to speak the language prior to our trip really helped us to communicate with the locals. The Italians were so impressed with our ability to speak the language. They could see that we were really trying our best to communicate in their native tongue and it was much appreciated. One of the highlights of our trip was meeting Adam Sandler in Positano. He complimented our Italian and said he could use our help—and this is all thanks to our wonderful experience and our great teacher at Learn Language Hoboken!
Learning Italian brought me closer to my roots and helped me to enjoy my experience in Italy on a deeper level. I’m so thankful that I decided to learn a second language that has true meaning for me and is close to my heart.
Thanks, LLH - and "ci vediamo in classe"!
